In 1886, the Society of Jesus, also known as Jesuits, purchased the ranch of Harvey Wilcox. In 1888, the first building of the Sacred Heart Novitiate, also known as the Novitiate of the Sacred Heart, was erected. A seminary and vineyard were established on the grounds, and many priests served alcohol to patrons. A train station was established so that patrons could visit the vineyard.
