During the Revolutionary War, Thomas Jefferson escaped British forces looking for him at Monticello to live at his Poplar Forest home in Forest, Virginia, which was near the city of Lynchburg. In 1781, Thomas Jefferson wrote the book, “Notes on the State of Virginia” while staying at his Poplar Forest home.
