In 1847, Charles Henry McKiernan, who had gotten his nickname of “Mountain Charlie” from engaging in hand to hand combat with a California grizzly bear and winning, helped guide John Charles Frémont from the Big Trees wooded area in the future town of Felton to the capital of Mexican California in Monterey.

Home Of Juan Bautista Alvarado

Juan Bautista Alvarado was the governor of California while it was under Mexican government control. Juan Bautista Alvarado established home in Monterey, near the custom house, where the first government building has been established. However, under Juan Bautista Alvarado’s regime, the Russians built Fort Ross north of San Francisco. The creation of a Russian fort in California was viewed as a weakness in the Mexican government.
