Ishi – The Last “Wild” Native American

Ishi was known as the last “wild” Native American. Ishi was a member if the Yuhi tribe which lived within the area that is currently Lassen National Park. The Yuhi tribe was the most aggressive Indian tribe in his area, and during the Gold Rush that tribe faught back against militias and vigilantes that faught against them.

Five massacres killed about a hundred Indians. The ten survivors, including Ishi who was ten years old, lived in Bear Creek.

In 1916, Ishi passed away after contracting the disease tiburculosis.
