Richard Ratcliffe built a plantation on land that George Mason II, the grandfather of revolutionary George Mason IV, received as a land grant from the King of England. In 1798, Richard Ratcliffe donated four acres of his land for the purpose of building a courthouse within Fairfax, Virginia.
