In the 1800s, the town of Lexington, California was founded as a railroad town within the Santa Cruz Mountains. However, the railroad was not profitable and the company which owned it shut down the rail route in 1941, shortly after Highway 17 opened. In the 1950s, a dam was built and the former town was sunk underwater within a reservoir.

The former town of Lexington, California is presently part of Lexington Reservoir County Park.
