The town of Toll Gate, which became known later as Saratoga, California, was first explored by De Anza’s expedition on March 25, 1776. In 1850, the first settlers of the town arrived on the same year that California became a state.

Currently, there are historical markers within downtown Saratoga that indicate the history of hw town.
