The Santa Cruz Musuem of Art and History is located in downtown Santa Cruz, next to the original 1972 location of the Santa Cruz History Museum, within the former Santa Cruz Hall of Records building called “The Octagon”. The Santa Cruz Historical Society, which was founded in 1954, and the Art Musuem of Santa Cruz County, which was formed in 1981, decided to build a joint art and history musuem, originally called the McPherson Center for Art and History, at the site of the former Santa Cruz jail that was destroyed by the 1989 Loma Pieta Earthquake.
