Mountain Charlie Road – One Of The First American Roads Built Along The Santa Cruz Mountains

In 1858, the Mountain Charlie Road was one of the first American roads built along the Santa Cruz Mountains, after the Mexican-American War, after the Santa Cruz Turnpike Company awarded a contract to Charles Henry McKiernan. After Charles Henry McKiernan built a home and a road in the Santa Cruz Mountains, he engaged in a bear fight, and became known locally as “Mountain Charlie”.
