
In 1858, the Mountain Charlie Road was one of the first American roads built along the Santa Cruz Mountains, after the Mexican-American War, after the Santa Cruz Turnpike Company awarded a contract to Charles Henry McKiernan. After Charles Henry McKiernan built a home and a road in the Santa Cruz Mountains, he engaged in a bear fight, and became known locally as “Mountain Charlie”.
