
In 1888 the Sainte Claire Club was established by various prominent San Jose, California citizens, including James Duval Phelan who served as a banker, a mayor of San Francisco and as a U.S. Senator.

Author’s Note:
In 1920, James Duval Phelan ran a U.S. Senate campaign with a white supremacist slogan, “Keep California White”.
