Saadat Hasan Manto lived in India during British rule. After India gained independence, Saadat Hasan Manto moved to newly formed Pakistan.
In Pakistan he was charged with obscenity for his book, “Cold Meat”.

The Saadat would be estranged from his wife, and family, but he believed in his work so much he would not abandon it despite government pressure to do so.

On March 5, 2019 author Philip Hamilton saw the screening of the movie “Manto” at the opening night of the Cinequest Film Festival 2019 Maverick Spirit Award event. Nandita Das was one of the actors in that film and was interviewed after the screening of “Manto” at the California Theatre of San Jose.
