The French government was confronting a slave rebellion in Haiti at the time President Thomas Jefferson negotiated with the French royalty the purchase of the Louisiana territory. France needed money for their military endeavors, to stop a slave rebellion, and the purchase led to the expansion of slavery in the United States of America.
