The Founding Of Winston County, Alabama

On February 12, 1850, Hancock County, Alabama, which was named from Governor John Hancock of Massachusetts, was created from territory formerly in Walker County. The town of Double Springs, was established as the county seat.

On January 22, 1858, the name of Hancock County was changed to Winston County, to honor Alabama Governor John Anthony Winston.
