In 1585, British settlers established the Roanoke Colony, also known as the Lost Colony, in Roanoke Island within Dare County, North Carolina. The Roanoke Colony was the first attempt at founding a permanent English settlement in the present boundaries of the United States.
Author’s Note:
Britain’s first attempt at establishing a North American settlement was actually at the Baffin Island off of the Canadian coast, before the Roanoke Colony was established.
