On April 9, 1865, the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse, was part of the Petersburg to Appomattox Campaign, which is also called the Appomattox Campaign, and was General Robert Edward Lee’s army’s last stand against General Ulysses S. Grant’s army. The battle ended with General Lee’s surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia at the Appomattox Courthouse.
Author’s Note:
While many historical claim that end of the Civil War occurred with General Robert Edward Lee’s surrender, the true end of the Civil War occurred after the end of the last land battle between Union in Confederate forces, in Texas, four months after General Lee’s surrender.
