On May 23, 1864, the Mount Carmel Baptist Church of Ruther Glen, Virginia was the site where thousands of General Ulysses S. Grant’s troops were stationed on their way to another battle. On May 24, 1864, General Grant established his headquarters at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. The next day Grant left the church headquarters as he moved his army towards cold harbor.
In present day Carmel Baptist Church is one of five locations of the Civil War Trail of Caroline County.
