Port Royal, Virginia was founded in 1652 as a port town. The town was the site of a U.S. Civil battle, when soldiers with the 24th Michigan and the 14th Brooklyn regiments attacked the area in May, 1863. In present day, the Port Royal History Musuem details the extensive history of the town.
