Corling’s Corner – A Former Rental Slave Market

At the time slavery was legal in the United States, not all plantation owners and farmers decided to buy their own African American slaves. Many tobacco farmers in the state of Virginia would “rent” slaves for a one year term to assist with the hard labor of their business operations. At Corling’s Corner, in Petersburg, the individuals that were not yet bought or rented, were held in slaves pens.
