The Founding Of Lunenburg County, Virginia – “The Mother Of Counties”

In 1745, the County of Lunenburg was formed from part of Brunswick County, Virginia. The county was named after King George II, who was the duke of Brunswick-Lunenberg. Lunenberg County, Virginia is one of the original thirteen “The Hanover Counties” which were named after a royal family.

William Taylor, from Kings County Virginia, was one of the earliest English settlers in Lunenberg. In 1861, Lunenberg got the title of, “The Old Free State of Lunenberg”.
