The ironclad submarine, the H.L. Hunley, was constructed by engineers working for the Confederate government in Mobile, Alabama. Horace Lawson Hunley was the primary financer of the submarine that was named after him.
One Febuary 17, 1864, H.L. Hunley sunk the Union shop Housatonic, along the Carolina coast, making the H.L. Hunley the first submarine in the world to sink another ship. The H.L. Hunley went missing and it was not until 1995, that the Civil War era submarine was rediscovered.
