Mare Island, U.S.S. Independence, War of 1812

Figurehead Of The U.S.S. Independence

The U.S.S. Independence is a naval ship that was commissioned to fight the British navy during the War of 1812.

The ship was first deployed, from a Boston Navy Yard, on June 22, 1814 towards the end of the War of 1812.

The USS Independence continued to serve the US Navy after the Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24, 1814 by tailing sailors on missions to fight the Barbary Pirates in the Atlantic Ocean.

The USS Independence first arrived on Mare Island in 1855.

The USS Independence was decommissioned in 1912, a hundred years after the War of 1812 began.

The most of the ship was demolished, after the decommissioning, but parts such as the masthead were kept as artifacts.

Author’s Note:

This masthead is currently an exhibit at the Mare Island Musuem in Vallejo, California.
