The Royal Spanish Presidio of Santa Barbara

The Royal Spanish Presidio of Santa Barbara, also known as El Presidio Real de Santa Bárbara, was the last fortress, constructed by the Spanish, in Alta California. The presidio was built in 1772 and it’s soldiers quarters El Cuartel is the oldest original building in Santa Barbara County and the second oldest original building in the state of California.

The Royal Spanish Presidio is an American Revolutionary War historic site, since the military stationed there had assisted Americans during their fight against colonial era British ruler. In present day the presidio is known as the, “El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park“.
