Civilian Conservation Corps Camp 826

On October 1, 1934, The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp 826 was established in Glenwood Springs with a barracks fitting 200 men. This camp site was one of hundreds established during President Franklin Dwight Roosevelt’s administration to put Americans back to work during the Great Depression.

The civilians constructed a road that led to lookout mountain, made improvements to the local airport and created lift towers for the Red Mountain Ski Area.
