Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe, Little Rock

The Founding Of Little Rock Arkansas

I’m 1772, Little Rock, Arkansas was first discovered by Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe, a French explorer who also discovered part of Oklahoma. The first causasian settler in Little Rock was a fur trapper named William R. Lewis, who built a house there in 1812. Little Rock was a minor wilderness town when Arkansas became a territory of the United States of America in 1819.

A historical marker indicates the site where a militia sympathetic to slavery, came to a garrison to demand the surrender of federal troops, two months before the American Civil War began.
