The first site of the college of Norte Dame was located in present day Santa Clara Street, within downtown San Jose. The college became the first chartered women’s school in the state of California in 1866.
Santa Clara County, including downtown San Jose was mostly an agricultural area in the 1800s. There were other places such as the Quicksilver mine that consisted of miners.
However, 70 years after San Jose experienced reminders of the Gold Rush, it faced development. This development led to the administration of Notre Dame to relocate the college to Belmont.
I have written an article about a historical structure at the Notre Dame College in Belmont called the Ralston Hall Mansion in April 2018.
