The Black Power Statue at San Jose State University

The Black Power Statute on the campus of San Jose State University is a tribute to the 1968 Olympic athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who rose awareness to the ongoing racism against blacks in America.

The caucasian Olympian, who supported his teammates cause, asked to not be in the number two section of the statue, so that his depiction would not detract from the legacy of his African American teammates. The statue was dedicated to San Jose State University on October 16, 2005.

A California mural, which has the two members of the Black Power Statue, is at the bar “Paper Plane” in San Jose.
